Dear Friends of Goloka Dhama,
Every year, the devotees of Lord Krishna joyfully gather to celebrate Govardhan-puja, one of the sweetest and most meaningful festivals in our tradition. The occasion commemorates the divine pastime of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to protect the residents of Vrindavan, teaching us the futility of pride and the beauty of taking complete shelter in Him.
In the pages of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, we read how young Krishna persuades his father and other residents of Vrindavan to worship Govardhan Hill instead of performing the annual sacrifice to Indra, the king of heaven. Indra, proud of his position, became furious and unleashed a devastating rainstorm upon the village. Devoid of fear, Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill with the little finger of His left hand, providing shelter for all the cows, gopas, gopis, and residents of Vrindavan for seven days. Indra was humbled, and the devotees’ faith in Krishna’s loving protection was strengthened forever.
For us, Govardhan-puja is not just a remembrance of a historical event; it is a living meditation on the truth that Krishna always protects His devotees and that our real happiness lies in serving Him with love. Govardhan Hill is described as Haridasa-varya – the best servant of the Lord – because it provides everything for Krishna’s pastimes: caves, fresh water, grass, flowers, and a natural stage for His divine activities. By worshiping Govardhan, we are worshiping both Krishna and His dearest devotee.
Here at the Goloka Dhama temple, Govardhan-puja is celebrated in a most festive and joyous way. Devotees lovingly construct a beautiful form of Govardhan Hill from stones, decorating it with flowers, greenery and sweet offerings. The Govardhan-sila, a sacred representation of the Hill, is bathed in a traditional abhishek ceremony with milk, yogurt, honey and fragrant substances. Then, in a spirit of the annakuta festival in Vrindavan, we make a beautiful offering of many sweets, savories, fruits and even a cake lovingly prepared for the pleasure of Govardhan and Sri Krishna.
The temple hall is filled with kirtan – the sweet singing of the holy names accompanied by joyful dancing. The atmosphere is surcharged with devotion, gratitude and celebration. Everyone who attends is uplifted by the energy of the festival, which carries the same spirit of shelter and joy that the residents of Vrindavan experienced when Krishna lifted the Hill.
Govardhan-puja is a reminder that Krishna does not need elaborate rituals or displays of power; what He truly accepts is the simplicity of our devotion and our offering of love. Whether one brings a mountain of sweets of simply a flower from the heart, Govardhan accepts it all with equal joy.
We warmly invite you, your family and friends to join us for this year’s Govardhan-puja celebration at our temple. Come and experience the joy of singing, dancing, honouring delicious prasadam, and offering your hearts to Krishna through the worship of Govardhan. It is a festival for everyone – full of sweetness, gratitude and divine happiness.
Let us come together, just like the villagers of Vrindavan, under the shelter of Govardhan and celebrate the endless mercy and protection of Lord Krishna.
